MAF tree planting schemes should continue with changes -- report

A review of four MAF-administered afforestation schemes recommends they should be continued in a modified form, but with greater clarity of purpose, better cost control and greater consistency between regions. It also says regional councils should use “less carrot and more stick” with land owners who continue unsustainable activities on erosion-prone land.

The Australian Forest Products Association (AFPA) believes the Intergovernmental Agreement on Tasmanian Forests is bound to fail. The agreement was signed on Sunday by Australian Labor prime minister Julia Gillard and Tasmanian Labor premier Lara Giddings.

ETS deadlines getting closer

Forests owners with 100 hectares or more of forest land registered in the ETS or the PFSI will be required to use the Field Measurement Approach (FMA) to determine the change in carbon stocks in their forests from 1 September, says MAF in issue 28 of the Sustainable Forestry Bulletin.
